“It Was a Blast!”—Camp Life on Christmas Island, 1956–1958

Abstract

Christmas Island was the location for a series of colonial South Pacific British nuclear tests from 1956–1958. Here, we explore the personal experiences and the day-to-day lives of the young male soldiers who travelled from the United Kingdom to conduct these tests, as well as experiences of the local Fijian community. This provides a more domestic meaning to the experience of nuclear test veterans.
