The Kauri Case—Native Nature and National Identity in Titirangi, New Zealand

Published
2019-01-03

Abstract

Saving native trees in Auckland mirrors ideals of both urban environment and lifestyle. The “rights of nature” are exclusively applied for native species and strengthen their symbolic power as representatives of national identity in the city. However, population growth and housing projects challenge the paradigm of saving nativity in Auckland. The article portrays the local discussion in Auckland by reflecting on the battle for a kauri tree in West Auckland.
